( Purple nutsedge ) ( Yellow nutsedge )
Nutsedge is a common warm season perennial grassy type weed in our area. This weed in fact is not a grass but part of the sedge family. The two most common types we have in our turf grasses are purple and yellow nutsedge. They are most common in lawns with poor drainage, irrigation from ponds or lakes and or lawns that receive too frequent irrigation. These weeds are not controlled by pre-emergent weed controls and have to be sprayed post-emergently with a weed control mainly specific to sedges. These sedges spread by rhizomes and tubers and can be very difficult to control depending on the infestation and environmental conditions. Correction of irrigation practices and poor drainage areas should help discourage nutsedge growth. Post-emergent weed controls can be effective but will take time for results and may cause yellowing of the desirable turf. Heavy infestations of nutsedge may take years to minimize. Grassy weed controls are not part of our regular 7 application program. Depending on the amount of infestation your lawn may have there may be an extra charge to spot spray the grassy weeds.
